Alexander Faris, composer - obituary
He was musical director for the European premiere of Bernstein’s Candide in 1959, orchestrated music for Luciano Pavarotti, helped to revive interest in the 19th-century operettas of Jacques Offenbach and conducted the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company’s final season in 1982.

Death announced of Bass Trombonist Adrian Morris
Universally admired as a performer, musician and friend, he was the former bass trombonist of the Ulster Orchestra where he played for 11 years, before moving on to take on the role with immense distinction at the Hallé Orchestra. A Fellow of the Royal Northern College of Music, he died, aged 50, on Monday evening.

I got all excited when I saw Gillian Moore’s Sinfini piece, Classical etiquette: the new rules. Finally! I thought. Someone arguing that people shouldn’t be keelhauled for sneezing in a quiet bit! Sadly, Moore’s new rules are basically the old ones, with a bit of ‘Calm down, everybody!’ attached.
